Special Events

BACK TO SCHOOL BARBECUE: The evening before the first day of school, the PTA sponsors a BBQ for the students and their families, faculty and staff. It is a chance for children to greet each other, see their new teacher and hug last year’s teacher.

NEW FAMILY TEA: In September, the PTA sponsors a tea for parents of new students and their sponsoring families. As a means of orienting new families, the PTA provides speakers to talk about various aspects of life at Cabrillo.

BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT: Held annually in mid-September, Back-to-School Night is a parent-only event to introduce the administration, faculty, staff and PTA representatives. Parents will meet with their children’s classroom teachers and learn about plans and activities for the upcoming school year.

TEACHER APPRECIATION & WELCOME LUNCHEONS: PTA parents demonstrate their appreciation for our dedicated faculty and staff by hosting two annual luncheons. The first is held before the start of the school year as our way of saying “welcome.” The second is held in the Spring to thank our teachers and support staff for all of their care and efforts throughout the year.

HEALTH CHAMPIONS: Health Champions is a health-education program offered by SMMUSD. In this program, your child’s weight, height, blood pressure and upper arms are measured and counseling is provided on exercise, diet and other healthy habits.

REFLECTIONS: This annual PTA-sponsored art, essay, music and photography contest encourages creative expression by all interested participants. Each year, students are given a central theme on which to base their artistic interpretations. All children are invited to participate in this competition. This year, the theme is “I Wonder Why. . . ”

FAMILY NIGHTS: Periodically, the PTA sponsors cultural evenings for the entire family. Free, or for a nominal fee, families enjoy music, dance, and artistic programs right at their own school.

RED RIBBON WEEK: This nationally acclaimed anti-drug education program takes place each year in late October. Weeklong activities culminate with the distribution of achievement certificates to students for helping to keep themselves, their school and their community, healthy and drug free.

MISS NELSON BOOK FAIR: Held in December and in the spring, Juan Cabrillo holds a Miss Nelson Book Fair to provide students and their families the opportunity to purchase high quality books at low cost. All proceeds benefit the Juan Cabrillo library.

FIESTA CABRILLO: Fiesta Cabrillo is Juan Cabrillo’s carnival, which takes place at the beginning of May close to Cinco de Mayo. It is a fun-filled event with age-appropriate games for our children. The Bilingual Committee provides the food.

HONORARY SERVICE AWARDS: In the Spring, the PTA honors parent, teacher and community volunteers who have generously donated their time and energy to enrich the lives of our children.

KINDERGARTEN ROUND-UP: Bring your prospective kindergartener to meet the kindergarten teachers and see the kindergarten classes in action. Find out all the information you need to help your child with this transition.

OPEN HOUSE: In June, parents and children are invited to observe the progress the children have made throughout the school year. Open House also provides an opportunity for parents to visit the teachers in other classes in preparation for the following year.

ART SHOW: Formerly held at the McLean Gallery, this real art show provided an opportunity for each student to display a work of art. The Art Show is now held during Open House.

FATHER’S DAY CAMP OUT: The night before Father’s Day, dads and their kids set up their tents on the back lawn of Juan Cabrillo and camp out. Children ride their bikes and scooters, sit around a campfire, have dinner and enjoy spending time with their dads. No Moms allowed!
